Full Process

The point of this project was to design a flyer for advertising a coming event at the church. Research was done on the theme of Pinewood Derby to understand what visual elements could communicate the message of the event well. The ward activities committee provided basic information about the activity for the text in the design. Adobe Fonts was searched for typography that was visually accommodating to the theme. Then, different fonts were tested with different typographic systems, on Adobe Illustrator. While the hierarchy was being developed, a checkered flag pattern was made to signify the idea of a race. And an image of pinewood was included in my design background from the public domain to emphasize the idea of the pinewood derby. The text and the illustrations were given a burnt brown look to work with the background. The title was given an inner shadow to provide the illusion of carved lettering. The pinewood derby event was originally scheduled for October, but then the activities committee had me wait for them to find a new date for the activity. So, the flyer design was held off for a while. They eventually chose to have it in December, and the date and time were revised accordingly. A trail of flame was then illustrated to represent speed in the theme, with similar properties to the title, but slightly more orange. Later, the name of the ward was placed into those flames. The wooden background texture was retouched on Adobe Photoshop and the colors of the text and illustrations were finalized. Along the way, all the foreground content was made slightly transparent to give visual significance to the background texture. In a feedback session, the activities committee needed some of the instructions on the flyer to be added and reworded, especially regarding the food. After that was fixed, the shape of the flame trail was smooth out a little. And lastly, the visual balance between the content of the design was finalized. My design for the flyer was then formatted into a PDF file with which the committee could print copies.
