Full Process

The point was to design a greeting card for congratulating new parents, so came the researching of different objects associated with representing life and congratulations. Brainstorming different patterns and styles to use for both the cover and the inside of the card. As well as, different phrases or compliments that could be used inside. Then, it was on to searching Adobe Fonts for visually appealing typefaces for the mood of the design. Leaning toward Brush Pen and Marker styles of typography, some of those were activated for later testing on Adobe Illustrator. After drawing thumbnail sketches to devise the layout of the card design, the fonts were tested against different decorative backgrounds and patterns that seemed congratulatory. Flowers proved to be the wrong kind of congratulations and a simpler pattern of shapes would make for a more straightforward design. On Adobe Illustrator, my illustrated shapes were given drop shadows and spread out in different sizes using the Fillinger script feature. Color swatches were then randomly applied to the shapes using the Randomus script feature, with global swatches to adjust the color later on. More colors and fonts were tried to find a balance in the visual aspects. After finishing wording the phrases, a warp effect was used to give the text inside an arch, to make it more comfortable against the illustrated content. The finished card design was then saved in different printable formats, such as AI, JPG, and PDF. In the end, the less vibrant shapes allowed for the more vibrant text to catch eyes better, with some visual balance.
