Full Process
The project began with offering to assist the church by making the poster design for their Christmas event. And the ward activities committee provided me with information regarding the event and its theme. Research was done to better understand what styles of design could be associated with the theme of Winter Wonderland. Then, Adobe Fonts was searched for potential typefaces that could accommodate this theme and help establish a style for my design. On Adobe Illustrator, my chosen fonts were tested out, along with the visual balance within the layout and hierarchy. Different colors were tried throughout the design process. Some visual appearance of snow was needed for the poster’s style. So, paper snowflakes were physically cut to allow for inspiration regarding the snowflakes’ symmetry and patterns. Snowflakes were then illustrated digitally and made into a stroke pattern as a festive border on the edge of the design layout. Along the way, feedback from the activities committee suggested that the right kind of Christmas trees could communicate the theme. The poster was resized in preparation for ordering its print at Staples. Pine trees were then drawn by hand in black marker and scanned to become digital. The trees were vectorized and changed from black to white. With the trees in vector format, they could be more easily scaled and placed to accommodate the new poster dimensions. A friendly color of blue, with variations in brightness, was used with white to emphasize the style of the design. The layout came to a visual balance, when the text offsets, hierarchy, background colors, and illustrations were complete and fit together on the poster. One last feedback session with the committee instructed me to include the providing of dessert in the text, along with the dinner. With that final change to the poster, the activities committee asked me to make a flyer to go with it. And by using the same content and style, the flyer was quicker to design. With both of them approved, copies of the poster and flyer were printed at Staples, trimmed, and set up at the committee's church.
