Full Process
To design the poster and smaller flyer for a ward dance, the activities committee gave me the event’s information, as a first step to advertising its musical message. Then, came researching the theme of Dancing Through the Decades and testing out different typefaces from Adobe Fonts. On Adobe Illustrator, establishing the design’s typography with some chosen fonts went on throughout the process. To choose and balance them in a hierarchy formed for a certain style. The musical notes and symbols were illustrated to work with the ward’s appreciation for simple designs, and to convey the idea of musical composition. The design itself was a test of balancing the typography and illustrated content in order to support the theme. Along the way, my initiative pushed me to experiment with colors. Like a gradient combination of purple-maroon and blue, in the background. Although, the ward activities committee decided to have me stick with the grayscale style. And after receiving more feedback from them, the poster was given more music related signs and revised in its text hierarchy to allow for the time and place to be in the subheader section. Without color, the poster’s content was still able to vary in different shades over the white background. Finding the right shades was a delicate step, especially with the shadow effects providing depth for some of the content. Once the poster was finished, the small flyer was made with the same sheet music design style. While there were single-sided and double-sided iterations of the flyer made, readability compelled me to pursue the latter. One last session with the activities committee had declared that my poster and flyer were ready for use. Then lastly, they were formatted as PDF files to be printed in quantities.
