The poster and flyer began with me suggesting a few different Christmas themes for the breakfast party, which included that of O Christmas Tree. Then, after the ward activities committee chose the theme, they provided me with information on both the party and service activities that were scheduled for the same week. That information was reworded multiple times throughout the design process, in order for it to act as the typography on the poster and flyer. Research was done on different methods of decorating for and communicating the theme. And that was when Adobe Fonts was scoured for accommodating typefaces and styles. Some of the fonts chosen from there were fancy, and some were more friendly for readability. On Adobe Illustrator, the layouts were made with a Bilateral (centered on a single axis) typographic system. And the fonts were first tested out on the poster design to create a hierarchy for all the typography in the project. A font with a fancy ribbon style was used for the title, while garlands were chosen to be the visual content alongside the text. Communicating the theme meant using green for the garlands, which lead to the background areas needing to be white and red. Both to contrast with the content and to account for the committee’s budget for printing. Garland decor images were then generated with Adobe Firefly and imported to Adobe Photoshop. Where two of these garlands were photoshopped onto the edges between the red and white. That background content was then linked onto the flyer, as well as the poster. A process of retouching, scaling, and positioning allowed me to extend and level out the garlands. Which also meant leaving out visual clutter that was counterproductive to the balance and contemporary style within the layouts. At the same time, the hierarchy and color of the poster text were adjusted to accommodate the visual elements, on Adobe Illustrator. After receiving feedback from the committee, the information for the service activities was updated for better clarification. Then, much of the typography was rescaled for the flyer’s dimensions. Once the designs of the poster and flyer were both finalized with balanced form, printable PDF files were formatted in color and grayscale. So, the ward activities committee could print the designs either way.
