Full Process
After spotting my skills in graphic design, the vice chair of MCR asked me to pitch a logo design that could represent them as a group. A patriotic mood of red, white, and blue was needed. As was the elephant sign, which would allow for consistency with their past logos. Research was done by studying the online assets and other logo pitches for MCR, which helped in the search for communicative approaches for the logotype and brandmark. On Adobe Illustrator, different typefaces from Adobe Fonts were tried out for “Marion County Republicans” with much experimenting throughout the process. With the other logo pitches being overly complicated, it was apparent that MCR was looking for a simpler design for their logo. And so, my rough sketches didn’t need to be too detailed. Then, on Adobe Illustrator, the digital rough drafts began. Some drafts with the elephant symbol and some without. The potential fonts were tested to see which one could best communicate the message of the logo. To present my drafts for feedback, some of them were given an outer glow shadow to provide a sense of depth. The vice chair’s feedback pointed out how the design would do better with its stars upright, rather than rotating. And after experimenting more with my rough drafts, they were applied to PDF file format for presentation in MCR’s selection process for narrowing it down to their top three logo candidates. And chosen as a finalist, was my circular logo with the elephant and the Oscine typeface. My design needed to be revised once more for the final round of selection. Like, to make sure the background was white and the elephant had a red body to contrast with it. After the design was finished with a strong color palette, different color iterations were needed to present the design for different uses. Iterations like, full color, grayscale, black only, and white only. In a pitch deck of PDF slides, these were presented along with mockups that were made on Adobe Photoshop. Mockups demonstrating how my design could appear on MCR assets. Like, their website, their Facebook page, and their letterheads. And all this for judging my final design at its best, in the final round. My circular design was voted to be their logo, and it was sent to them in vector and raster formats for various uses. Later, the vice chair asked me to prepare the logo for printing on fabrics, such as hats, shirts, and shoes. Which meant making sure that MCR need not use the outer glow shadow or the white background in the design every time.
