Full Process
After being asked to design a Halloween poster, my goal was to communicate the point of the event, so that readers could see a fun activity scheduled. The information on the event was provided to me for the poster's text. Different ideas associated with Halloween were looked into, in order to help me visualize how the theme of the Pumpkin Carving Contest could be illustrated. Objects such as pumpkins, ghosts, and a full moon were chosen, while typefaces accommodating to the poster theme were picked from Adobe Fonts. And then, a public domain image of the full moon was filtered and vectorized, using both Photoshop and Illustrator. This was in preparation for using the moon in the background window. The rest of my poster design was made using Adobe Illustrator entirely. While testing out and organizing different fonts on the poster, simple geometric shapes were used to illustrate different objects. Like the window frame, the bookcase, and the frame on the poster’s edge. So, the full moon was then included behind the layer of the window. The pumpkin illustrations were made based on my studying of pumpkin shapes, while my ghost was given a recognizable design. Keeping in mind, some readers would be younger ward members, like kids. There was even a green glow and subtle transparency added to the ghost. The typography came to convey a somewhat spooky vibe. Especially with its slimy title. And the placement of the illustrations was fixed, when it no longer visually clashed with the typography. Which was achieved through the poster’s color, darkening shadows, and suspenseful light supporting the theme.
A church project to design a poster of a pumpkin carving event for Halloween, with a sense of fun.
