Process

A client needed a logo to act as the brand for their crochet hobby and to communicate those interests. What they were looking for was a somewhat simple design for their logo that could convey both their idea of crafting and a snazzy mood to the audience, while still using their full title of "Crafting Wiz." This project began with me researching and discussing with the client how they wanted to convey this brand of theirs. At first, it was just their Instagram profile that they planned to use the logo for, but later on it was suggested that the logo also be used as commemorative stickers and tote bags to go with the client's crochet projects. When the production of the logo design itself began, it was ideas made thumbnail sketches for visual aid. Then, once the client helped me narrow it down, the idea of the crochet hook in a circular holding shape was chosen to be become the brandmark. It was onward to the digital phase of the logo design, on Adobe Illustrator, where the brandmark was reconstructed and combined with the logotype, which was made from a fancy sans-serif typeface called Pacifico, found on Adobe Fonts. A few different orientations were tried for the logo and there were many iterations designed for each of them, and from the rough drafts to the refined drafts, feedback from the client allowed for both good communication and good revision of the design. After that, there were a couple of different orientations left to choose from and some color testing to be done on the logo. Even though client wanted only purple to be used on their logo, there were still multiple types of purple to consider. But, along the way, it was apparent that a form of red-purple was the most visually appealing choice, especially because it often conveys moods that are creative, expressive, and thrilling. That single color was chosen, but there was also the brightness of the color to experiment with, which is how the logotype was given a slightly darker shade than the brandmark, allowing for slightly more emphasis upon it. Then, for the logo design itself, all that was left was converting the whole thing to paths, and tweaking the shapes of both the brandmark and logotype. Along with the multi-shade final digital draft, a one-shade colored version and a black-only version were included to given to the client, as were the reverse for each of them. And even though the client favored the multi-shade version, this let them have multiple options for their branding outlets, so they could better attract the attention of their audience. They wanted their stickers to have a custom shape, which lead me to determine that applying a contrasting offset shape behind the logo would allow it to be less flimsy as a sticker and still retain its custom shape. With that being the case, two 3" by 3" stickers were designed, based on the multi-shade version and the reverse one-shade version of the logo. In the end, the final design helped me demonstrate how this brand would appear when used on tote bags, stickers, and the Instagram profile for the client. From learning much about their interests, the style of the logo has successfully visually communicated the same creative and snazzy mood that comes from the client and their crochet hobby, too.
