Process

A client asked me to design a Halloween poster for their upcoming contest for pumpkin carving. They asked for a 24" by 36" poster conveying an idea of a fun Halloween for readers to experience. My different ideas for the design included pumpkins, ghosts, ghosts with pumpkin heads, and a spooky moon background. This project was on short notice, so there wasn't much time to brainstorm. Once the ideas for the design were chosen and the client provided the information for the poster's text, the Halloween themed fonts on the poster were chosen from Adobe Fonts. A public domain image of the moon was found and it was vectorized using both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to make the view in the background window of the poster. The window frame and the bookcase were made with simple geometric shapes, as was the frame on the edge of the poster. The pumpkins' illustration was slow and productive with me basing them on images of actually pumpkins, but over this process they were eventually improved to the point of use. And along the way, it came to light that the ghost included needed to have a simpler illustrated design than first intended because the poster is needed to catch the attention of a specific audience, in which most of those age groups participating would be kids. After a few attempts at the ghost, the illustration of its figure was made simple enough for kids and recognizable, all the same. One with a green glow and a transparency for spookiness, but not to draw the attention away from the pumpkins too much. When it comes to Halloween, moods of spooky and fun go hand-in-hand and this poster is made to convey that, as well as the "Pumpkin Carving Contest" itself.
