Process
Starting out as a task to convey myself in an image, this self-portrait illustration became something even more exciting. At first, it was just a matter of choosing a style of illustration, which ended up being comic-style. But then, along the way, came the research for comic drawings and the visual inspiration from the appealing appearances of that style. It was important to figure out what the best pose would be for the portrait, while considering the chosen style. It occurred to me that comic-style quite often conveys the mood of excitement to its audiences. So, it stood to reason that the pose chosen for the portrait should do the same for my audience. So, multiple photos were taken of different types of poses for conveying that same mood to test out how well the poses might do that and how well they compare with each other. Ultimately, the best choice of photo appeared to be the one where there was an kick of action coming. And so, it was that photo that my different sketches, and eventually the final illustration, were based on. Once my physical sketch was revised well enough, then came the digital phase of the process. Little by little, there were several different iterations of digital illustration to be made, before the end result. From the basic shapes and outlines to detailed additions revisions to the colors and background of the portrait. This project was a slow process that opened my eyes to many more practical uses for Adobe Illustrator.
